Bugs!

Bugs!

Bugs are everywhere! From harmless fruit flies to monstrous spiders, I’ve seen it all. Over the past five weeks, I have been in cities and jungles and on beaches, mountains, and volcanoes. The one thing they all have in common, is that they all have bugs!

My problem with bugs is that I get allergic reactions when they bite me. My bug bites usually swell and cause severe itching sometimes it forms a bubble-like puss. Even when I use bug netting and the strongest bug spray on that the market I still feel like a “free all you can eat buffet” for bugs.

I have seen some pretty impressive and terrifying bugs like spiders that were at least a half a foot in diameter, crickets the size of my palm, and the most dreaded of all (j/k), butterflies the size of my face!

The worst attack I had on this trip was in Belize. We had just started our yearlong trip and we did not have any bug netting. We were staying on the beach in Hopkins, and the Caribbean Sea’s seaweed overproduction (from global warming) held bugs that loved the taste of imported, American flesh! In that attack (over the span of two nights), I got about 20 bug bites all over my body! One of them even ballooned with puss to the size of a bouncy ball! It was horrible!

It is true that bugs are everywhere and inescapable (at times), but they remain fascinating and often beautiful. My experience with bug bites have given me an appreciation for where we live (in California) because I can observe bugs without having to get to close and personal with them! Wish me luck for the rest of the 47 weeks ahead!
